Every household has its rules and growing up, mine was no different.

Knocking on closed doors before entering. No interrupting. No climbing or jumping on furniture. Picking up after yourself and making amends when you hurt someone.

These are just a few common examples but the one that carried a heavy weight in my house was putting dad first. My dad was always the first to be served at the table. There were five of us, but he always got the best piece of meat. It was an unwritten rule but we all knew what it meant: Honor and respect towards the head of the household.

Honor is something found in all sectors of life. We honor veterans for their service, we honor loved ones through fidelity, we honor authority figures and even sportsmen when they win a game. In fact, there is even honor among thieves!

The sad thing is when we see people being dishonored or forgotten by society. I remember visiting a nursing home and seeing many elderly people who in truth didn’t need to be there. The nursing home was doing a great job to care for them, but it was sad to see that their own children had put them there because they were too busy or not caring enough to look after them. Imagine the pain of a parent being rejected by his or her child.

We always honor those who we respect and regard highly. Who have you been honoring? Has God made it to your honors list?

“A son honors his father, and a servant his master.
If then I am the Father, where is My honor?
And if I am a Master, where is My reverence?
Says the Lord of hosts.” (Malachi 1:6
)

When you honor God, He responds by honoring you. He transforms, rebuilds and blesses you before those around you. But that’s when you put Him first. When you respect him, obey him and spend time in His presence. Perhaps you’ve been wondering why you are not enjoying the fullness of God’s power. The answer could be in the way you have been honoring Him – or not.

Would you put God in a nursing home?

May the God of the Bible bless you.
