There is a saying in this world that “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me”. As children grow up in school they are taught to say this and to convince themselves that it is true. The only problem is that in most people’s life, words can and have hurt them tremendously.

For example, how many people were told, “you are just like your father”, or “you will end up in jail one day”, or “no one is going to want you”… and all these things have become their reality. Words have power! There is no denying that.

That’s why the Bible says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue” Proverbs 18:21.

Why would God go so far as to say DEATH and LIFE (which are the most important extremes) are in the power of the tongue, if words had no power? Words do have power, a lot of power. So you must be careful how you use your words, and also what words you listen to. When you speak to others, don’t use your words to tear them down.

When you speak to your wife, children, co-workers, etc. use words to build them up and never to tear them down. And when someone tries to tear you down with words, use the most powerful words of all (the Word of God), to build yourself up.

May the God of the Bible bless You
