Have you ever had to borrow money from someone? When you did it, did it feel good? Did you like it? Of course not. No one likes having to beg or borrow or depend on favors and handouts. But some people live their entire life doing just that. They have to borrow to pay rent, borrow to get groceries, they depend on the EBT or the check from the government each month. Their life is filled with depending on others. And forever owing or paying back someone. And the worst part about it is that the ones that loan to them always hold it over their head and remind them that they owe them.

Abraham refused to be in that situation. He said,

“I have raised my hand to the Lord, God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth, that I will take nothing, from a thread to a sandal strap, and that I will not take anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich’— Genesis 14:22-23

You see, Abraham made a pact with God and determined that he would not have to beg or borrow or depend on anyone else. And he was determined that no one would be able to say, “I have made Abram rich”.

Now, what about you? Would you rather stretch out your hand to get help from someone, or lift up your hands to God and depend on Him? The choice is yours. If you want to lift up your hands to God and stop depending on others, then the first step is to make a vow to be faithful to Him. Just two verses back before Abraham spoke about this vow to not take any handout, we see the secret to his success and why he had courage to make such a bold statement:

“And he gave him a tithe of all.” Genesis 14:20

If you do what Abraham did, then you will be able to speak how Abraham spoke and live as Abraham lived. Prosperous.

May the God of the Bible Bless You
