And there lies the problem. The heart will always have its own desires and ideas, and it usually isn’t with your best interest in mind. There are songs and poems written about it, sayings built upon it, and bad decisions made using it. “Follow your heart.” But to where? Perhaps you can’t even count the times when the desires of your heart led you astray, and the Bible warns us of just that.
“The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked; Who can know it?” Jeremiah 17:9
In a world where everything is easily accessible and glistening to the eye, you can be easily deceived by your heart. However, there is something much deeper going on that we all need to pay close attention to, not with our hearts, desires, or wants, but with our souls.
The Bible describes the heart as a warning for us not to be deceived. After the temporary pleasures of the heart are fulfilled, there usually follows a great yearning in the soul. The things of this world cannot fulfill the needs of the soul. The heart may lead us to look for pleasures in an attempt to bring some sense of peace and joy, but in truth, only when we turn to Jesus are we fulfilled.
The heart may want what it wants, but the soul is thirsty and is asking to be quenched. Do not be deceived. Recent signs lead us to realize that time is fleeting and the heart, filled with deceit, would like us to believe that we have lots of time to do whatever we please. But stop, think, and listen to what your soul is asking for. That’s the desire that you should fulfill.
May the God of the Bible bless you!
