What is your greatest treasure? Your spouse, degree, children, job, etc.? As you think about the precious things you own in life, these are the things that usually come to mind.

What if those things disappeared one day? Imagine one morning waking up to find out you’ve lost your job. What then? What treasure can replace the lost one? There was a certain man in the Bible who also had a treasure and he put all of his time and effort into it.

So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” Luke 12:18-19

He had already made plans and put all his hope into his riches. His “soul” was satisfied with the physical things that he had but he didn’t plan for what would happen when those things no longer existed.

But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’ “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” Luke 12:20-21

Was it wrong for him to have a rich and successful life? Of course not. God wants you and your family to be well taken care of. However, his mistake was putting his entire life into those riches. He followed the desires of is heart and was deceived into thinking it was enough to satisfy his soul. Don’t make this mistake. Make God your priority above all else. He will make sure you are always taken care of.

May the God of the Bible bless you!
