When a child wakes up frightened after a bad dream, they don’t analyze the fear or try to decipher what the dream meant—they run to their parents’ room. Just being with them changes everything. The fear loses its power in the presence of safety.
Night can feel heavier for some. It’s not just tossing and turning—it’s a deep sense of fear. Thoughts race, shadows move, voices call to them in the dark, and peace disappears. If you’ve ever experienced this kind of spiritual terror in the night, you’re not alone—and more importantly, you are not without protection.
In Psalm 91, there’s a reminder of where true safety is found. It says, “You shall not be afraid of the terror by night…” (Psalm 91:5)
Earlier in the chapter, we’re invited to dwell “in the secret place of the Most High” and abide under the “shadow of the Almighty.” A shadow only covers you when you’re close. Those who are close to God have no reason to fear. The terror by night can not touch them.
Remind yourself to stay protected under God’s shadow.
May the God of the Bible bless you!
