Tradition says that fish is the meal of choice on Good Friday and that’s not the only practice that takes place at this time of year. Believers have their traditions: wearing black, not eating meat, going to church etc. Even non-believers have prepared for what has become a money-making week: selling Easter cards, Easter candies and other seasonal merchandise.

Good Friday is the most important event on the Christian calendar and there is a reason for that: Jesus took all pain and suffering to the cross and declared that ‘it is finished’ so that you no longer have to put up with suffering. However, the true essence of Jesus’ death and resurrection seems to have gotten lost along the way with the majority not benefiting from this ultimate expression of God’s love. After all the traditions have died down and this date has passed. What difference do you see in your life?

Most probably none. Sickness, addictions, family breakdowns and financial stress are just some of the issues that you continueto face every day in spite of the fact that He has already freed you from them.

“He blotted out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us and contrary to us, and He took it out of the way, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed authorities and powers, He made a show of them openly, triumphing over them by the cross.” (Colossians 2:14-15)

Jesus publicly shamed and triumphed over the evil principalities and powers that have been tormenting you. He has already declared your freedom and is waiting for you to turn to Him and collect it.

Don’t get so caught up in useless traditions that you miss the point and true benefits of the cross.

Jesus died so that you can live. Surrender to Him so that you can start to experience the life He has already promised to you.

Or you could spend the day eating fish!

May the God of the Bible bless you.
