When we think of perfection, we think of something without fault, defect, or mistake. Actually, the dictionary describes perfection as something or someone being “as good as it is possible to be.” Clearly, as human beings, we have never and will never reach a level of perfection. We are prone to mistakes, faults, and flaws, and we see those things in our daily lives.
Why, then, does the Bible describe Noah as being perfect in his generation or Abraham being called to walk before the Lord and be blameless? Is this a possibility for mere human beings?
When we think of perfection in the Lord it is easy to become sidetracked and think of it as being without flaws or faults, never making a mistake or committing an error. However, to have a perfect heart before the Lord is to be filled with His Spirit. When our heart is filled with the presence of God, we can live a life that exudes righteousness before God.
“For He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? Therefore, you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.” Matthew 5:44-48
The Lord Jesus walked the Earth and faced temptations, emotions, rejection, problems, and the struggles that come with this world. Still, His heart remained perfect before God because He walked with Him. He had the Spirit of God living inside of Him; because of this, although He went through everything a human being faces, He remained perfect.
Perhaps you have been seeking perfection in your walk with God, and it seems like an unreachable goal. Today, reach for His Spirit and seek His presence. To truly be perfect before God, we must have a heart after His own. There is perfection in His presence.
May the God of the Bible bless you!
