This may sound like a silly question, but answer it for yourself; by the end of your reading, it will make sense to you…
Let us say that you are very thirsty. Someone gives you a bottle of water and two empty cups. On the outside, both cups are clean – not even a spec of dust or a fingerprint can be seen on the outside of either one. However, on the inside, one cup is dirty while the other is clean.
The question is: which cup would you choose to pour your drinking water into? Would you choose the clean one, or the dirty one?
Of course, no one will choose the dirty cup to drink water from! This simple example will make the Word of God more understandable as it says,
“Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also.”
(Matthew 23:26)
Our God looks upon us from heaven, in search of the ones who have chosen to clean their cups. His desire is to pour out the Holy Spirit upon all people, yes – however He can only give His Spirit to those who have cleaned their cups and show they desire His Presence more than anything in this world.
There is nothing you, me, nor anyone can hide before God. Our thoughts are spoken words to His ears. If on the outside, you are well-dressed, do charitable deeds and even go to a church, but on the inside you still hold grudges, live in doubt and treat God like He is not important in your life, then your cup is not yet cleaned. Clean your cup, and He will pour out His Living Waters inside of you. And that feeling of emptiness – that seems to never go away – will be replaced with peace. A peace that this world does not understand.
“Jesus stood and cried out, saying, ‘If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”
(John 7:37)
