There comes a point in life when we may feel tempted to walk away from Jesus and live life according to our own desires. We may think, “I want to do what makes me happy. I want to live life on my terms. I have plenty of time to come back to God later.” But what we gain temporarily on earth is never worth risking what God has promised us eternally.
Jesus said in Matthew 16:25 NKJV:
“For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.”
Following Jesus means choosing His will even when our own will seems more appealing. The world may offer freedom, pleasure, success, and the opportunity to do whatever we want, but those things are temporary. We take none of them with us to eternity.
Think about someone who spends years saving money for something important. Then, because something fun suddenly catches their eye, they spend all their savings on things that will only bring temporary satisfaction. In the moment, they may feel free and happy. But eventually, when reality sets in, they are left without what they worked so hard to secure.
Life can be like that. We can become so focused on what we want right now that we lose sight of what matters eternally.
Jesus is not one of many ways to God. Jesus is the way. We should never trade our relationship with Him for temporary desires, worldly pleasures, or the freedom to live according to our own will.
Whatever this world offers us is temporary. Eternity is forever.
