“Not everything that glitters is gold.” How many times have you heard this saying throughout your lifetime?
Perhaps you heard it from your mother, and if you ask her, she heard it from your grandmother. If you are a parent, I believe you have already said this to your child.
Whenever we hear this saying, it’s a warning for us to be careful with what our eyes see because the result could be bad or painful.
There was a man in Bible days who would have done well with this saying, because his eyes told him the total opposite: “everything that glitters is gold,” but his end was not good! Learn from his story.
Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: (Genesis 13:10-11 NIV)
His eyes deceived him because he did not use faith. The lesson for you today is this: don’t allow your eyes/your desires to lead you! Instead, allow faith and the will of God to lead you, as your decisions will impact your life and family.
Lot suffered, and his family suffered because of his poor decision based on what he saw.
Don’t allow the glitter of this world to deceive you! See what happened to Lot because he made a decision based on what his eyes saw.
The four kings seized all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food; then they went away. They also carried off Abram’s nephew Lot and his possessions, since he was living in Sodom. (Genesis 14:11-12 NIV)
Use your faith/your mind, your intelligence, not your desires or what your eyes see.
May the God of the Bible bless you!
