We are constantly shaped by the examples we choose to follow. There are some traits we take from our parents, others from friends and relatives. How often do you find yourself saying something you heard your mother or father say, or a new word buzzing around the internet? That is because everything around us influences us, but we choose who or what we follow.
Scripture is full of both good and bad examples—lives that either point us toward Christ or away from Him. One of the most memorable examples in the Bible is Judas Iscariot. Judas sold Jesus. He saw the miracles, heard the teachings, and even held a position among the disciples. Yet, he chose a path of betrayal. His story is a reminder that being near to Jesus isn’t the same as following Him.
Peter also had his failures—denying Jesus three times—but repented, returned, and was restored. Through all these examples, there were 10 out of the 12 disciples who kept their eyes set on Jesus. It’s not just about following people—it’s about following Jesus.
We must decide what example we follow in faith. Yes, we will see bad examples. People will fail and turn away from Jesus, but we can not follow in their footsteps. Choose wisely who you follow. Have your own faith.
“Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” 1 Corinthians 11:1
